We are 1G
We hope to contribute (NOT CO-OPT) by encouraging first gen students to view themselves as active historical subjects, build generational + community knowledge, and reflect honestly on the first generation experience.
We are a support group + archival project based out of Phoenix, Arizona focusing on the collection, discussion, and preservation of first generation student experiences to lead our own narrative. Without generational college memories, us first gen students struggle to navigate college challenges and pass on the lessons we learn.
This project is inspired by John Hopkins' University's "First-Generation Students Oral History Project" as a way to build a community memory where we, as our own historical subjects, can pass our knowledge down to our peers and future students through archival preservation. As former Student Historian in Residence at the University of Wisconsin, I believe that we owe it to the next generation of students to lead our own narrative and preserve the lessons of our struggles, not just successes.
